What to expect at my Open Studio

I know that visiting an artist’s open studio—especially one held in their home—can sometimes feel a little… uncertain.

Maybe you’re not sure what the etiquette is, or what to expect when you arrive. Maybe you’re curious but not ready to buy, or you’re another artist wanting to drop by just to say hello.

This post is for you.

Whether you’re a seasoned studio-hopper or thinking about coming to one for the first time, here’s a little guide to help you feel comfortable and welcome at my Open Studio on Saturday 21st June in Edinburgh

“Will it be awkward if I don’t buy anything?”

Not at all. Open studios are about sharing creative work and inviting people into the process. You are absolutely welcome to visit, browse, and chat without buying a thing. There’s no pressure whatsoever—just good conversation and interesting art to explore.

“Visiting a home studio feels a bit intrusive…”

I completely understand. But rest assured, the studio is open because I want you to come in! The space will be set up to feel relaxed and welcoming, and it always makes my day when people pop by.

“Will I find it? Is there parking?”

Yes! Look out for the green venue boards – they’re very bright and hard to miss! There’s a map on the flyer which shows you where all 10 of this year’s participants are based.  You’re welcome to message me for directions. There’s free on-street parking around my house on Saturdays and the whole Grange Open Studio route is easily walkable.

Here’s the flyer with all the information you’ll need – feel free to screenshot or share with a friend

“Will it just be big expensive paintings?”

Not at all. I’ll have a wide range of work available: original botanical prints, handmade artist books, gel plate monoprints, cards, and more. There’s something for every taste and budget—including just a good chat and browse.

“I’m an artist too—can I just come along for a chat?”

Yes please! Some of my favourite visitors are fellow creatives. Come and say hello, and let’s talk materials, process, or anything you’re working on at the moment.
